Can anyone explain why the 260z I have is actually a 240z. Here's the deal. Car is titled a 74 260z with #'s in the 30,000 and month of june. But, by owning 15 or so of these cars, the car is definately a 240. Not only does the dash say 240, but the console is, the pleated vinyl on the floor, shock towers, tail lights, etc. I know someone will say they swapped vin plates, but they all match, door, windshield, and the screw on one under the hood, and don't look to be tampered with at all. Just wondering if there were any that fell through the cracks during the changeover. Thanks Eric

Car is titled a 74 260z.
Then it is a 260Z (or you bought a stolen car with a doctored title).
Simple.

I have a buddy that has a 76 280z and it wouldnt pass smog here in California, so he transferred the vin plate, gauges and whatever else he switched off the 240z from a junk yard and registered it smog exempt as a 240z. wasnt stolen, but its "legal" as far as he is concerned and no one will know cept him. there are ways around everything, some legal and some not....

if the engine in the car is the stock one from the factory, the plate inside of the engine bay should have the engine casting number pressed into the plate. This will tell you how extensively the numbers may have been matched/if they are the right plates/numbers at all.

So his 9 year old car would not pass smog rules back in 1985? ****, the 240Z was not smog exempt back in 1985 either... Man, that sounds awfull fishy.

Yea, changing VIN's is a crime. Most criminals also don't really care. What is the penalty in California for intentionally changing the VIN and then registering the bogus one? Maybe you're buddy can also forge a Social Security card to make himself "tax exempt" too?

Does the engine number start with L24 or L26? That should tell you. The vinyl, glove box door, tail lights, etc are easy to swap on. If the engine # on the block matches the # on the pass side strut tower plate then go with whatever the engine # indicates (L24 or L26).

What is a 260Z?

A 260Z has....

An L26 engine.
A VIN that starts with RLS
Latemodel 260/280 style tail lights and dashboard/interior.

The first two will tell you what it is. If the VIN STAMPED INTO THE FIREWALL on the drivers side says "RLS30" then it's a 260Z. Production of them started in June of 1973 for Export, and January of 73 for the Japan Domestic Market.

So it is possible it's a 260Z, or a 240Z, State DMV's are notoriously innacurate for putting the proper year / model on titles. They are idiots, plain and simple.

If the VIN on the firewall is an HLS, and not an RLS, then the car is a 240, has been erroneously recorded, and you can simply go to the DMV and change it.

But why bother? Who Cares?

There's no way someone took a 280 to a Z show and fooled everyone into thinking it was a 240. Maybe from 100 yards. The dash is different, tailights, grille, bumpers, front apron, tire/wheel size, carpeting, console, steering wheel, hood, just to name the obvious. Some people are just so **** gullible.

I agree on the 280z visibly is not close to a 240z, but he changed over the interior completley as well as the bumpers. He just took practically the whole 240z body over to the 280z frame.

It was at the MSA show this year and im pretty sure not too many even noticed it being what it was...
