$170 to remove a broken bolt?!?

Here's the scoop: This weekend, trying to unbolt the exhaust pipe from the manifold, we broke a bolt. The dang things were like welded with rust. Anyway, we concluded the thing was gona be way to hard to get out without a lift, so my grandfather decided to outsource the job (first time he's done so in god knows how many years) Midas gets it done today, no problem, but it cost $170 to remove two broken bolts from the botom of the manifold (they broke the other one) and install some new bolts. My question is: Is that alot of money for a job like that, or am I just too used to doing the work for free myself?

You need to go back to Midas and talk to the manager. Ask him how long it took. Shouldn't have been more than an hour. Did they give you an estimate?

Best time to go is when they are crowded and raise a stink. You should at least get $100.00 back.

Sounds like G-Pa may need some more $$$ if he "helps out" any more with your project...

Let's see $170.00/2 = $85.00 each / 2 hours each = $42.50 an hour...

No it sounds just right.... easy job just a little time....

I'm not paying it

Spoiled...

you are spoiled by doing it yourself.

Then again, it should have only been about two hours labor to do the job---so depending on shop rate that could be anywhere from $100 to $170 in my neck of the woods. An average rate would be between 65 and 75 an hour, so 130 to 150$ for the labor via flatrate (broken stud removal)

You could have fared worse! If they decided the "only proper way to remove these is to remove the manifold and send it to the machine shop" then the bill would have been considerably higher.

if they helicoiled the threads, or replaced with like hardware, and simply didn't drill it oversize and put a throughbolt then I'd go for that cost (you play you pay---then again if they broke one........)

But if the goobered the repair, then cost should be lower consummate with driveway level repairs of Pedro with the torch.

well when I got my L28ET I had a broken stud in the head and it took me a couple hours to drill it out and tap it. I wound up messing up the threads a little -_- Now that was with the engine outside the car god I can't imagine how crappy it would have been with it in the car.

but it depends on how it broke also, like they said its a simple job just time consuming, hooray for carbide bits!

This might not make you feel any better BUT last month we were forced into buying one of those 30K miles, Japan used engines just because the bolt broke that holds on the lower pulley, (Harmonic balancer), so it was gonna cost so much and so much time to remove the crank and take it to the machine shop, that we went the sightly used 30K mile used engine option. Yes, everyone tried to drill out the bolt but crankshaft bolts can be extra hard metal. It was just a 97 Kia, and the bill was $2,200.00 We could have bought a new car! All for just ONE broken bolt. Norm K PS; We also got the dealer $170.00 timing belt and 120.00 waterpump, new seals and gaskets included. Later I found out that a Dayco timing belt at P. Boys is $29.00 BUCKS! That's WHY we LIKE to do it ourselves.

Try it yourself next time. Think people they broke trying to remove them which means they are rusted solid. They probably had to drill the whole stud out without damaging anything and rethread them with the manifold in place. I'd want at least 2 hours which at $75 an hour is $150 plus the cost of studs, gaskets etc. So yes you are too used to working on your car yourself for free. Anyone who things you should get $100 back is also someone who is too used to doing things themself for free.

As far as the "they broke one", you broke one too and somehow they are magically supposed to be able to remove the other equally rusted ones without them breaking? I tell people these are YOUR bolts and if they break when I'm taking them out, THEY broke I didn't break them!
