Well i pick my engine (L28ET) up tomorrow (finally, god customs and quarentine is LAME!) and i am gunna rebuild her fresh and properly, since the engine has done a good 140k miles what would you guys recommend, i know you should check all the measurments when the engine is apart but id still like to hear some input from you guys :)

Would the rings still be good?

Bearings?

Timing chain ect?

Thanks

Mat.

The way I always look at it is "only a rich man can afford a cheap rebuild" So well i have that thing apart i would redo everything, make it near new. As for the rings bearings and timing kit i would always replace them well i have it open. They may still be good, but for how long is the question.

Mileage is not an issue, time is.
A 20 year old used engine will need just about everything replaced if you want a reliable engine. After the block is dipped and the head rebuilt, then rings, bearings, seals, pumps, fuel injectors, timing chain and guides, thermostat, ignition wires, etc.

Sounds like a great project! Should make the 82 much mo fun!

Get the book "How To Rebuild Your Nissan and Datsun OHC Engine", by Tom Monroe, from Amazon .com. It details very clearly how to check everything for wear and decide what needs to be replaced. My guess is that, with 140k, the excellent durability of L6 bottom ends will come through for you and it won't need anything in terms of bearings. You can probably get by either with nothing at all or with a home cylinder honing and ring job. I just got an 83 zx with 130k on it and it still measures factory spec compression on all 6 cylinders, and I intend to leave it untouched. The head is a different story. Where the bottom end of L6's are remarkably durable, the heads are relatively fragile, and you will probably be best served by going over the head very carefully. There is no need to fix what ain't broke, though. So again, go by the book, and decide what to replace after you get a good look. The book is essential; it will pay for itself many times over.

Nothing...

Barely broken in!
Might consider the valve seals and possibly reseating the valves to be sure, but the bottom end (as you will soon find) is nowhere near service limits at only 140K.
I have over 220K on mine, and nothing needed other than vavle seals...
Still have 186 on compression on the N/A unit, my turbo which I installed over 40K miles ago still shows no degredation after that many miles of 17psi boosting daily...

And it came rom a 77 N/A Cedric, and was converted in 87!

I agree, when I took my engine down at 200300 miles, it was for the cylinder head work. The car was getting 400 miles to the quart. The problem was the valve guides, and more then likely the valve guide seals.
I was even running 15psi of boost on the engine and it was just fine.

If anything just pull the pan and check the rod bearings. Those engines easily go 200K and I have a customer with an 82ZXT with 320K and it still flies! Unless you buy dealer Nissan parts (or high end stuff like JE pistons etc) , the stuff you buy from the parts store isn't going to be as good as what's already in there. Instead of spending a bunch of money on the engine, spend it on a good fuel managenment system or at least a Z31 setup.
