Re: why does a 73 weigh 300lbs more than previous

there was more sound-padding (junk, in my opinion) and metal reinforcements. it's a stiffer ride in a 73 than the previous years, but a little heavier. my advice, remove the instulation, and lose weight.;) only kidding.

Re: why does a 73 weigh 300lbs more than previous

I'm a bit surprised to hear that there is that much extra weight in a '73. How do you know it weighs 300 lbs more? The later 280s weight more because of extra smog stuff and much heavier 5-mph bumpers. I'm no expert on 240s, but always thought they all weighed about the same.

Ditto, I thought 70-73 weighed same

The only thing that springs to mind is that I think the tranny mount is different. Also, the carbs are different on the 73 and maybe there is a little more smog stuff. Also, I think the bumpers had filler pieces connected to them to eliminate the space between the bumpers and the body of the car.

They do....

Its my understanding that the Gross advertised weight changed in 73, from 2450 lbs to 2750 lbs, to place the 240 in a slightly less restrictive emissions bracket, as far as any documentation I have found, all 240's weighed the same. although I could be wrong, I see no reason why a 73 would weigh any more than the earlier cars, mine doesn't have door beams, or big bumpers, or even a/c. someone with a 73 should find a grain elevator as they all have drive on scales that you can usually use for free.

Re: why does a 73 weigh 300lbs more than previous

I am pretty sure that the 73 had the skimpiest of door beams - just simple, thin u-channels of metal, which is also seen on the early-74 260Zs. (I think they also introduced the simple bumper shocks that are also seen on the skinny-bumpered early-74 260Z.)
There is also the added smog gear and associated plumbing used with the flat-top carbs vs. the 72 round-tops, which added weight.

It was this extra weight which forced the 260Z intro into the US - to restore performance to the Z name, and then after these 2 years of flat-tops, safety, and more emmisions; the FI 280 in 75.

I have a '73, and I can tell you the doors are quite a bit heavier that those in the earlier models. There are also more substantial bumper mounts up front, but they are still just metal bars, not shocks. There is no additional sound deadening material inside. As suggested, the only way to find the true weight of the car would be to weigh it.

Re: My '73 is heavy but I like it.

I recently weighed my '73 and with a full tank it was 2650 lbs. However, I am running an R200 diff, a gas tank from a '75, (two gallons extra capacity) the Aero kit II from Motorsports that I filled with expandable foam, a rear panel speaker box with a pair of 6" x 9"s, extra sound deadening wherever possible, 15" turbo mag wheels and tires, and, yes, an "82 turbo motor with a T5. I don't mind the weight because with 12 pounds of boost on an otherwise stock engine, it does 1/4 mile in 14 seconds flat @ 105 M.P.H.

Synopsis:

Bumper changes, chassis reinforcing in the front and rear, door beams(those'73 doors are heavy!), and other minor things(bigger heavier carbs/manifold heavier exhaust) all pused the car up in weight. BTW: 1970-71(early) are the lightest, but more prone to corrosion. 1972 is considered the best by many experts.
I dunno...I like my '74(early) with the fiberglass bumpers and 'other' changes. It is a really nice ride.
Buy what you can afford and enjoy it for what it is.

accuracy of scales

I was curious about the scales used at landfills(dumps),, the ones they use to weight your car coming in and out to know how much to charge. If they could measure withing 50Lbs or so, that would be good enough for me.

I will have to check again but I thought the data plate on my '73(6/73) said 2900. I was suprised to see that. Even though I have owned the car since ~'91, I never looked at vehicle weight. Anyone else gotta extra-fat 73?

Re: accuracy of scales

The plate on the door is more often than not the GWVR, the gross weight vehicle rating. This is the maximum total weight, including the passengers. Curb weight is the number you need to compare. Take your car to the dragstrip once, see how it does, then go weigh it - you will then know for sure. My 280Z turbo with T5, half a tank, no bumpers and me in it weighs 2810 lb.
