I have a N/A 87 ZX with 5 speed. If you let the car idle in neutral, there is a whinning noise that goes away when you press in the clutch? I have some theories but not sure - any thoughts?

Hey Bob my 87na does the same thing. I've just assumed it was the throw out bearing.

Yes, you are probably right. I think mine is a little worse though becasue there is also a "clunking" when I take off in 1st or back up in reverse. Also there is the same clunking noise in all gears except 4th. It doesn't pop out of gear but it is noisy. May be the clutch release bearing, pilot bearing or a U joint. ANy thoughts?

My thoughts

I would say that if it is your throw-out bearing you are lucky, I have spoken to a few transmission shops and they have said that they input bearing in many of the Z transmissions go bad after around 200,000 miles. My clutch isn't too old, though my car does the same thing and I am going to rebuild the tranny. That clunking could be your Diff mount. I would check that and my transmission mount, that could be your problem.
