The 84-86 turbo Z's had the mustang T-5. The 87-89 turbo's and 84-89 non-turbo's had the 71C tranny. Im not 100 percent on that information though.

 

Different Tranny

The turbos did have Borg warner t-5 transmissions, though they were not the same as the mustang T-5. I was told by a tranny shop that all T-5 meant was that it was a 5 speed toploader transmission manufactured by borg warner, with several different styles of gearing, outputs, and different bellhousings. In regard, they are not the same trannies. Also The Trannies up to 86 N/A's are not the same as for turbos after 87, I was hearing that they were a lot different, I think I read something that Z-Bum posted that was talking about that. ANyways, I have an 86 NA, and The tranny in my car is okay for my car, though if I were to start adding mods, I am sure that it would not hold the horsepower that well. Just my opinion.
