switch speedo and tach?

I'd like to have my speedometer to the right of the tach. Is it difficult to switch their positions?
Thanks,

You would absolutely have to remove the dash, and I'm not sure the two parts would interchange and fit. Also not sure whether dash illumination would work.

I'll be the dissenting voice and say that it might not be that difficult.

I believe there is enough slack in both the speedo cable and the trip-odo reset cable to reroute them both to where the tach normally resides. And if you're young and flexible, I bet you could do that without pulling the dash.

The electrical umbilical to the speedo would be no problem since the connector off the harness is already between the speedo and the tach. You would just be routing that harness stub from one side to the other, but about the same distance.

And I believe (but haven't looked into) the physical mounting system is the same between those two gauges.

The biggest issue I see is.... Is there enough slack in the TACH wires to reach if the tach is in the left hole? If you really want to do this and the wires are too short, it would be relatively easy to build a six inch extend-harness.

I think it's doable. Silly, but doable. Haha! :)

I think "why" is a reasonable question. The speedometer is much more visible in my car. If I were racing, I'd probably be more interested in RPMs than MPHs, and having the tach on the right would be preferable. I do not race, so having the speedometer on the right is preferable (to me).
I am also driving a Ford F150, a Ford Expedition, and a Mercedes 230SL. All of them have the speedometer on the right and, no, I have not moved them there. In fact, I do not recall having a car with the tach on the right. I suppose the 1971 240Z did, but that was over 40 years ago, and I don't remember that detail.

It would be a considerable disappointment to remove the dash only to find the gauges cannot be switched, so I guess I'll forget about it. Perhaps someone who has switched them will chime in and persuade me it is reasonably doable.

Thanks for the input.

Agreed that it would be a pain to go through a bunch of effort only to find it doesn't work. And even though I think it could be done without huge difficulty, I'm just a guy with a keyboard who hasn't actually tried it.

Here's to your driving enjoyment whatever you do! (y)
