Starting problem

I have an '87 n/a 5spd. Begining this morning I've had a weird starting problem. When I got in the car and tried to start it, everything (beeping noise for open door, security light in dash, cd player came on) was normal when I turned my ignition to acc, but when I tried to start the car, I heard a click under the hood and everything suddenly went dead. No lights, no radio, no power windows, nothing. The car did not even try to turn over, just the click was heard. I assumed my battery was low for some reason so I trickle charged it for a few hours (battery charger showed the battery was slightly low), and tried it in another car to be sure it is good. After putting the battery back in the car, the car started fine 3 times in a row, then the 4th time did the same exact thing as before. When I turned the key all the way, there was a click from under the hood and the car was suddenly dead. When this happens, the whole car stays dead until you disconnect the battery and reconnect it. Everytime I disconnect and reconnect the battery, the car will start once or twice normally then it will go dead and I'll have to disconnect and reconnect the battery again. Has anyone else had this problem? It would sure help if someone could point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance. -Mike

Check the cable connections at the starter. Sound like one is loose, and, when you disconnect the battery, you're wiggling the cable enough to re-establish the contact, albeit temporary.

OR

You've got a cable that is badly corroided, and, again, when you wiggle it, contact is re-established.
