Squeaky Steering

OK I haven't checked the Haynes manual yet 'cause it's at home and I'm at work... but here's the deal; my steering is really squeeky, I'm not sure if it's loose or not but it sure sounds like it, particularly at low speeds (ie parking).

I'd really appreciate some suggestions for diagnosing the problem, hehe then I can think about fixing it...

Thanks in advance!

P.S It's the stock non-power steering, from a 260z 2+2

Where is the squeek in- or outside? Sometimes the steering column rubs and just needs some sili. spray around the col. Outside could be lots of things, but check the boots on the ball jts. and tie rods for tears. May be just in need of a lube job. (Just like the rest of us.)

steering column bearings were shot on my 78. I just replaced the whole unit but it looks like the bearings could be changed without problem. A store supplying bearings to industry could match up the size.

Rob,

Inaddition to the fellas advice I'd like to add that I found that I could stop or quiet down a squeaky steering wheel by lubricating the the copper follower / contact behind the wheel itself. the one for the horn, its quiet as a mouse now ! I lucked out and and thats all it was. Do however check and inspect the hub and col. bearings for sure!

Z,
Kevin
