rear end noise, not clunk

Hi.

Have a '78 280 z, 4-speed. I've looked thru the archives. Noise comes from rear end, mostly from left rear, though perhaps from right rear on ocassion, too. Only happens when starting in first or going into second, no vibrations.

The noise is not a clunking, its much more like a loud snapping or clicking.
Replaced mustache bushings (they seriously needed relacement anyway), but didn't solve the problem. Will look at the u-joints and front differential mount.

But if the loud snap/clicking noise, rather than a clunk, rings a bell with anyone, perhaps you could lead me in the right direction.

Many Thanks

Phil

Brake?

Try doing tight circles in reverse in each direction to see if it is worse in one direction.

Try again but modulate the brake to see if it changes.

click and clack

clicking could mean the rear wheel bearings need replacement. the check is simple. support the rear safety, grab the tire at 3 and 9 o'clock and try to move the tire in and out. any play is not acceptable.

now, determine if the play is happening there at the hub where the bearings lay OR if the outer control arm bushings are shot. to determine if you have the greater evil - to become a spindle pin Hall of Fame candidate - watch the control arm where the outer bushings are to see if movement occurs there.

then too it could just be a matter of the drum brakes needing servicing as Blue pointed out.
