I just bought a 90 300ZX 5 Speed and the gas is killing me but I love the car though..I saw on the dashboard it say Premium Unleaded gas only?!? Is is okay that I use Regular Unleaded or Unleaded Plus for 300ZX or it have to used Premium? If I used Regular Unleaded will it damage the engine?!? I'm just trying to save some money off gas..

I read in one of the magazines a few months ago they tested octane boosters and said they raised the octane number higher on low octane fuel than on high ...........meaning for an example if you use octane booster in a tank of 89 octane the booster will raise it to 93 or 94 but in 93 octane gas the booster only raised it to like 94 sooooooo in michigan it is actually cheaper to use 89 octane and octane booster every tank than it is to just fill up with 93 octane.

This subject has nearly been beaten to death. Yet it lives. The topic that will not perish.

Your car was designed for premium gas. The fuel maps and engine controls were written for premium gas. Your combustion chambers were designed with a 10.5:1 compression ratio - for premium gas.

If you run lower grade petrol, you will undoubtedly induce "detonation" and the ECU will retard the engine timing to compensate. Mind you, it only detects prolonged/repeated detonation and pulls back the timing - so each time it detonates unrestrained it is assuredly damaging the engine. You will also see poorer fuel mileage and lesser performance. All for 10 or 20 cents less per gallon, or a buck-fifty to 3 bucks less per tank.

Why risk engine trouble? Why get worse fuel mileage on cheaper gas (a zero sum gain)? Why ask why? Try Bud Dry. In the tank I mean.

Big 2nd.
10.5:1 compression ratio and 87-89 octane dont mix.

Your car will retard the ignition to a certain point on lower octane gas but you will still ping when you press the gas down hard. The point is that you will get less gas mileage on reg. octane gas than on Premium and it will be all for naught.

Do not destroy your engine slowly.

Thanks for all ur advice..no I'm not gonna slowing kill my kar from going to a lower octane gas I guess I have to stick with Premium..any one have any goOd tips to save gas though?!?!?

OH GOD NO! You are grossly misinterpreting the article! do not use octane booster on 87 or 89 pump gas! When they say "3 points" they mean 0.3 RON! boosting octane on anything but the best gas you can get does not make sense.

You will think you are doing good but you could really damage your engine because you are really running less than 91 (R+M)/2

The 300zx was designed for 91 minimum! 2$ more for fuel is way better then $3000 for a new engine.

if you cannot afford .10 or .20 cents extra per gallon then buy a honda, it says premium only for a reason

If the ecu over time will compensate for the lower grade of gas.... will this work in vise versa. I know the previous own of my car was cheap on everything. Would this reverse itself if I increase my octane?

Yeah if you think about it, what is it 1.30-1.50 extra per fillup for premium? The car definitely needs at least 91 octane, and it's not worth the couple bucks to mess up the engine.

Saving gas and improving efficiency:

1) Have an econobox for daily driving, use Z for pleasure, weekends, etc. Best Z32 milage I've gotten straight highway is 23 mpg approx. Not good enough for these prices.

2) Keep the engine well tuned - the right NGK plugs, clean filters, oil changes, clean throttle bodies, check timing.

3) Raise all tire pressures 2-3 psi above Nissan spec. How many Z owners have tires actually under spec from neglect?

4) Stay out of boost, shift up earlier, use 5th from 3000 rpm and above

5) Use lightest right foot possible for the traffic flow, since Z has tons of torque. Play this game - can you stay with traffic or slightly ahead with lightest possible throttle?

6) Reduce drag - under 40 mph turn off a/c, open windows, remove t-tops........ at highway speeds close the car up tight, use the a/c.

7) Watch this board - lots of suggestions for fuel savings now

I get pissed when I have to use 91. Only place around here that carries 93 is Shell and there Vpower. every other gas station in the past month in my area has dropped the 93. Bastards!!!! I figure, I'm gonna have to shell out of gas anyways, might as well get what it needs.
