You can also jack the engine up with the front pulley using a floor jack provided you put a wood block between the jack and pulley. Make sure you take off the engine mount bolts first, and make sure you're not stretching any wires or hoses too tight in the process. You should only need to bump it up an inch or two to really be able to get the pan out easily. I suppose it's possible to bend the crank this way, but I've done it several times and never had any trouble as a result.
