Hey guys and gals,

I live in the mountains, when I'm going up, if I leave it in 3rd gear and let the rpms climb she goes no problem. If I shift into 4th at around 3500 rpm she will slowly lose speed and won't speed up no matter how much throttle I give. Is this a symptom of tired engine, ignition timing, or poor driving? Any thoughts would be appreciated. She's all stock, 'cept for a pertronix point replacement pickup.

That's a symptom of 130hp to the wheels on a good day plus 3.36 rearend plus you using 4th.

Edit: Add elevation since you have carbs (are you tuning them for these mountain rides?).

If you have the original 2.4, the torque curve is @ 4400rpm and the HP @ 5600rpm, so there's your answer!

You are probably lugging the engine in 4th (1:1 trans ratio) going up a steep and long enough hill, so it slowly loses speed and power. Downshift to 3rd and keep the rpms up. It is very hard on the engine to lug it....

i might be the only one but i think you do have a problem probably just carb tuning problem i live in sac area and go up the mountian to tahoe all the time i never take it out of 4th gear i actually go most of the way in fifth.
mnelson was right though you want it to be over 4k rpms before putting it in 4th
good luck

I'm not sure if I can remember correctly, but for every 1,000ft. of elevation above sea level, you lose 1% of your overall horsepower. So go a few thousand feet up and it's noticeable.
