Hey everyone!

I'm new to these forums and was looking for some help from all of you well informed knowledgeable people.

I'm considering picking up a 240z or 280z to use as a fun weekend/sunny day cruising car. It won't be my daily driver. I just love the classic look and lines and have been a fan of Nissan/Datsun for a long time.

I'm not mechanically inclined, so I may have to look for a shop in my area (San Francisco) to help with maintenance. I don't have a problem learning how to work on the simpler tasks.

So my questions is which car 240z/280z is easier to find someone to work on/self maintain?

What are some of the major issues to look for when purchasing? I'm assuming any of these Z's with a significant amount of rust should be avoided.

Should I anticipate any insanely large repair costs for these vehicles?

Thanks for everyone's time in reading this!

Thanks for the advice. I found 2 240z's I like for sale. One is all mint original interior and paint with lots of performance/maintenance upgrades. Low mileage and seems to be running well. Only problem is the seller said there is some rust on the floor and the hatch area. This might be a deal breaker depending on how bad, but the price is pretty good.

The other has lots of replaced parts to brand new, and has some exterior body modifications (ones that I like). It also has a L28 motor swap. I like the idea of having a bit more torque and power but I'm not sure if this will cause future problems and reliability issues with the axles and transmission. This one is also 2k more than the other.

Any thoughts on this?

How about a big project 280z that doesn't pass smog? I love the looks of this one, but seems it may be a headache. The plus for this is the looks and the price.

I'm not mechanically savy, but I do plan on painting and doing body work myself. I have access to a shop with tools and I'm willing to learn basic repairs and maintenance. Afterall, that is part of the experience and enjoyment of owning a classic Z.

I'm really looking for something that has had parts updated/replaced for those problem areas. I've seen several that have done new clutch, suspension, brakes, fuel lines, carb etc. Something like this is great so I won't have to go through it myself. Just looking for something a bit more reliable. I'm not looking for a toy to speed and race around in, but something that is enjoyable to cruise and drive in.

No rust/minor rust is probably my main concern as I hear these cars are quite prone to rusting out. Paint is probably the least of my concerns as I plan to do this myself anyway.

If I could find something for 3k-7k and spend another 2k over the next year fixing/updating it is what I'm aiming for.
