Its up there. It is the size of a beer can. I cant believe you cant find it. Ok maybe not as big as a beer can but it is 3 times bigger than the one that was in my 71 Impala. I knocked my off its perch when I was hooking up the speedo cable when I replaced my speedo with a 130 mph.

Update. My 1981 had the round cylinder type we have all known but it is 3 times larger. Here is a picture of the one from my 1983 NA. Not what I expected. It has a weird mount like it mounts in a slot on the top of the steering column tube. I had to turn on the blinker to listen for it to find it. Sorry about the blurry picture. I was kneeling on my car lift 8 feet in the air with only about 8" of platform to kneel on.

Did you take the Z? I used to have a ski rack on my first Z. I drove it to Colorado and Montana on ski trips in the late 80's.

 

Here’s the only thing I can find which looks at all similar, the black object with white connector

located on the left side of the steering column.

 

Mine is hanging from the right side of the steering column. Short wires.

 

Dang! I'll keep looking. I'm about ready to pull the dash cluster to look.
