How can I tell?

Hi. I have a 1987 300ZXT and some mechanic I know recently told me that a rod bearing is going out in my car. He diagnosed this just by hearing me drive up but I don't really hear anything odd. How can I be certain that my rod bearing is not going out? Keep in mind that I can't afford to go to a mechanic right now. I need to know how to check for this myself.

Just my experience

If your rod bearing is going out, you will hear a loud knock, and you will be able to feel it, not only hear it. Also you can check your dipstick and you will usually find copper shavings on your dipstick. I think that your mechanic is trying to take you for a ride, though it will sound just like a loud knock that is consistent with rpms and gets louder and faster the higher you rev the engine. What made you take it to a mechanic orignially?

To be sure you need to pull the pan & the rod bearing caps.

If a the knock is loud enough to hear from a distance the bearing is out &
the crank will probably need to be ground.

A quick inacurate check. With the car running. Use a screwdriver to the pan &
your ear, for the noise/knock.

If a rod is going it won't last long. A main can last longer. Piston slap, a long time.

They are all suppose to make a different noise/knock. ??
