Does the gear shift knob simply unscrew?

I have put some good pressure on it, but it does not budge. Is there some special way to remove it?

Strap wrench

I'm sure it just unscrews. On the Z32 we use a strap wrench to break the blue Loc-tite free. If you have to get more leverage use a bar on the end but becarefull not to spin the car around in the driveway ) .

Re: Strap wrench

pull the leather shift boot up and you will see a slot for a wrench on the shifter shaft. put a wrench on it to hold the shaft, now it is recomended to use a radiator hose slide it over the shift knob to the smaller part under the bulbus part. Use a large channel lock plyers and unscrew the knob, careful to hold the shaft so not to turn it in the trans. it has locktight on it. when you put it back use locktight on it. this came from all data in the TSB section.

Re: Strap wrench

Or hold the shaft with the wrench and unscrew the knob with a strap wrench. They only cost a few dollars and you'll find many other uses for it. Plus it applies uniform pressure to the knob, and it has no teeth.

Holding the shaft

Thanks guys. I guess they used loctite or something on it cause it was VERY hard to get loose. I did this prior to reading these comments on holding the shaft, which I failed to do, I hope this did not cause any damage to the tranny.
