well i was stranded today because battery lost all charge and i was keeping an eye on my amp meter. it was fluctuating inbetween 0 and +45 amps on the freeway, it kept shooting from 0 to 45.

at idle its only a hair over 0

is this the voltage regulator or is my alternator bad? possibly even a bad connection?

i can't drive like this and risk being stranded again, any ideas?

Take your alt in to a autoparts store, and they will test it for free.

Without taking any measurements, its hard to tell. The regulator and the alt work very closely. Best practice is to replace both at the same time. If you have the FSM, you could follow the procedures to find the problem.

Also...

Zuber is right about changing things out together.

I went through LITERALLY 15 lifetime alternators until a mechanic told me to change out everything at once. Here is a list of "everything":

1. Alternator
2. Regulator
3. Battery
4. Battery Cables
5. Ground connection
6. Positive connection Nut on starter

Once I changed them all at once, I never had any more charging problems.
