i have the symptoms of a burn valve, but don't have the time to pull my head to inspect it. #5 cylinder is 50lbs lower compression than the rest. i have a sooty film in the #5 intake runner, and i'm getting a lot of poping and sputtering out the tail pipe, also there is an increase in unburnt fuel spell coming from the tail. i t first i thought i had a float out of adjustment, but after re-setting them it only got a little better. then i checked the valve lash and the #5 ex. valve was super tight but not all the way tight. this leads me to belief i opened up the door for a burnt valve. is there andy other things that could be causing this? i dont think its the head gasket, cause only one cylinder was low. it runs extremely smooth at 6000-6500 rpm. but at lower speads it sputters and pops and if you run it hard then let off the gas it sounds like an m-80 whent off on your bumper. need thoughts and suggestions, thanks

One way of finding out is by performing a leak down test. You can do this if you have some way of putting compressed air into the alleged bad cylinder at TDC. I use a compression gauge hose that has an air line connector on it. I screw the compression guage hose into the spark plug hole of the suspected bad cylinder. With that cylinder at TDC (you may have to pull the valve cover to make sure you're at TDC for that cylinder), hook up the hose to a compressor and pressurize the cylinder taking care that the crankshaft doesn't move. You may need to use a breaker bar wedged against the frame to keep the crank still. Once the cylinder has been pressurized, you can listen to the intake, exhaust pipe, and valve cover breather for leakage. If you hear air escaping from the exhaust pipe, you have a burned/bent exhaust valve (provided the valves are closed). If you hear air escaping from the intake/throttle body/afm/air filter, you have a bent/burned intake valve. If you hear excessive air coming from the valve cover breather or crankcase breather, you have bad rings.

sounds like a plan, its weird some days its bad (hot days) others its hardly noticable.
