Absolutely embarrased an older Vette..(MOVED)

so...

I been driving my Turbo around now for three weeks trying to get someone to go a couple lights, no takers. That is until the other night. I was headed back home, going down our town's main drag when I spot what looked to be about a 74 or 75 small block vette with sidepipes. I whirl around and catch up to him, and pull up by him and gun it a couple times to try to get him to go. Finally after about a mile or so of this, I guess he had enough, so when we leave the light, he punches it, and I punch it, and I IMMEDIATELY jumped him by like 5 cars, I banged second and jumped out on him by another 4 or 5. By the time we got to the next light, I had him bad. We come to the second light which is red, and he rolls the window down and asks me if my Z is "bottle fed", "nah" I say, just a little old 6 cylinder turbo. "Yeah Right" he says, and does a u turn back towards town. Needless to say I had perma-grin all the way home. These cars do run good don't they?

Re: Absolutely embarrased an older Vette..

easy there kiddo. If it'd been a newer vette (c5/C6) you'd have some room to gloat. But the mid-late 70's through the late 80's were bad times for the vette and most other pony cars. Side pipes don't necessarily necessitate a big block, secondly, even the big blocks of that time period were only making upper 200's, low-300hp numbers.

Congrats on the win anyhow.

EDIT: also if it was a 75 or after, there was no 454 option, the 350 was al that was available really.

Re: Absolutely embarrased an older Vette..

Yeah...

I know they were probably some of the weakest years. Smogged out, all that restrictive crap, but still. I thought I should take him, but I had no idea that it would be such a margin. My car is only stage III, which should be what? 300 RWHP?

Speaking of Z06, the vette show was in town, and there were some absolutely SICK vettes in town. There was a lingenfelter TT Vette, he said it was putting about 950 to the back wheels. ****! Can you imagine going to pass at 75 MPH and lighting up the tires? there were several supercharged z06's, one absolutely gorgeous red 2006 Zo6 that was also supercharged. A blown big block 1967 that was tubbed out and caged. They estimate that this show (effingham Illinois) draws about 5000 vettes between thursday and Sunday, and there were plenty around. The new ones are by far the best looking vette ever produced.

Re: Absolutely embarrased an older Vette..

If you were looking to race you should have gone to a track. Street racing is just a bad idea period. I can never understand why someone goes out of the way to turn around ("I whirl around and catch up to him, and pull up by him and gun it a couple times to try to get him to go") and provoke someone into doing something they probably would not have wanted to do in the first place.

Re: Absolutely embarrased an older Vette..

Yeah...

perhaps, but it was fun. The first light we went through was a frontage road to a kind of industrial park which is deserted at night, and the second light is about 3/4 of a mile with no entries or exits. I wouldn't be doing that through residential areas.

Fun or not it is a bad idea. Where I live, if you get caught racing, you lose your ride and your license. What fun would that be?

I am with dharel on this..

Think about it MaxxAction, you say that the streets were deserted, etc. but at the same time how many people that get caught thought the same thing before hand? I would bet pretty much all of them. The point is, a lot of people got up today like any other day, got in their car and died in a car accident. Do you think any of them planned on that happening? If you are going to do something unsafe, i.e. racing, then do it at a race track.

Re: Absolutely embarrased an older Vette..

I have a 76 vette....and a 90 na......

Both are different cars in every aspect

76 vette is rated 180 bhp....75 is lower than that, 74 is a little higher.

My vette is modified, but the gearing the 300zx' give them an edge. Remember your comparing cars that are 20 years apart technology wise.

My NA will jump out in front of my vette, but as soon as i hit 3rd in the vette, the NA is in the rear view.....Im running all stock enternals on my vette, but i have bigger intake/carb/air filter/cooling system....I dynoed at a little over 300...But i assume it was a tuned up dyno...

And all sidepipes mean on those years is that someone had an extra 3k to spend on exhaust....And now they have to watch their calves when they get out of the car....

GEEZ!

So, you guys NEVER do, or NEVER have done anything dangerous? You don't break the speed limit by more than 5mph? You have NEVER raced anyone down the interstate or away from a stop light? I need a little adrenaline once in awhile to feel alive. No, I am not thinking I am Vin Diesel in a new Fast and Furious movie, but if I cannot let the horses run once in awhile, whats the use of having it?

Re: Absolutely embarrased an older Vette..

I think the big thing, is you made an extra effort to initate it.

I hardly every initiate a race, and it takes someone special for me to act on it.

Re: Absolutely embarrased an older Vette..

That is not the point. Yes, I'm sure plenty of us have done "something dangerous." However, you specifically said that you were out looking t o race and "whirled around" when you saw the Vette. What would you have done if the driver of the Vette you were racing hit something or someone or just plain lost control? You would be up the creek without a paddle since you provoked the race. If you want to run, do it safely at the track.

Let this be a lesson Maxx: Don't post street racing stories unless they're extremely badass. You always get more grandfatherly talks than compliments.

Nice kill.

I keep seeing the phrase "what If" pop up, the Fact is he is now carrying on with his day not racing anyone and did not hit anyone. True indeed he put himself and others in danger, But bashing this guy because he made a post about his victory Is not neccesary. I dont condone Street racing but why is there so many people that spend $$$ on mods and upgrades then drive like bats out of **** on dangerous roads, i thought we were supposed to care about everyone not just street racers. I think all of us should be safe whenever we enter a car period wheather it be a z meet cruise in the mountains or midnight street racing.................

Re: Absolutely embarrased an older Vette..

I posted this several years ago and thought it would be good to repost:

I do not normally respond to these types of posts, however. . .

I have been known to do stupid things in my Z cars, lord knows I have had my 78 since I was 18 (I am now 35). I have a stack of pink slips that would get each of us a beating from our (insert appropriate person - wife, mother, father). So I normally do not throw rocks, but I will relate what happened to me about 5 years ago. . .

I was down in Flordia traveling to Cocoa beach, it was late and I was invited to join a race with a Camaro and a Mustang. We were on a 5 lane road 2 lanes in each direction with a turn in the center. Stores, dealerships, and side streets on both sides. I declined to participate (wife was in the car), however the two others took off. I watched the tail lights (yes I was moving above the posted speed limit, but not attempting to stay with the racers). All the sudden the Mustang (on the outside) slammed on his brakes and spun and hit a car entering from a side street. He survived, the girl he hit did not. She was just some kid who was on her way home from a friend's house and probably did not realize how fast the other cars were moving. I was at 80 and they were well ahead of me, so they were probably around 110-115.

Since that time, I still get on the throttle from time to time, but my recommendation is to keep the racing to the track, because it is usually the innocent who get hurt.

Sorry if this sounds like preaching, not my intention.

Regards,

Glen

I guess the thing that some people find disturbing is this:

I been driving my Turbo around now for three weeks trying to get someone to go a couple lights, no takers.
he has been roaming the streets pestering people for a streetrace

That is until the other night. I was headed back home, going down our town's main drag when I spot what looked to be about a 74 or 75 small block vette with sidepipes. I whirl around and catch up to him, and pull up by him and gun it a couple times to try to get him to go.
he's making illegal moves on the main drag to get another car to run on the main drag (you know, the most crowded, most heavily patrolled street in every town/city/neighborhood

Finally after about a mile or so of this, I guess he had enough, so when we leave the light, he punches it, and I punch it, and I IMMEDIATELY jumped him by like 5 cars, I banged second and jumped out on him by another 4 or 5. By the time we got to the next light, I had him bad. he beat a Vette by 10 carlengths to 60. not much of a race. if the Vette was real clean with aftermarket wheels, it was modified. if it was modified, the Vette wasnt racing. if it was stock, and looked great, it was all original, and a Vette lover would never chance racing down the street an all original matching mumber Vette.

you mentioned the word "IF". in the case of someone roaming the main drag looking for streetraces, the word isnt "IF", its "WHEN". the more often you do it, the more the odds are that something bad will happen.

Come on y'all! 2Fast2Furious all the way!!! LOL

j/k

Yes street racing is not safe and should not be done I agree. ''ve gunned it a few times but never flat out race another car on a straight away. I guess take it to a track or deserted road outside of town atleast, not in populated places. Someone can get hurt as posted above...

Re: Absolutely embarrased an older Vette..

Hearty feeling. :)

I walked a Z06 over the weekend from about 30MPH to ~85MPH - had him by several car lengths. Classic guy+gal+corvette divided by a 550RWHP Z32 = I could swear I saw his girlfriend hitting him when he pulled off the road. AKA: Priceless.

note: this was on a divided highway, straight line, no sidestreets, no other cars in sight, 55mph limit

Pumpfuel & Street Tires, I didn't expect to lose. :) 11.951 @ 124MPH 18psi

Re: Absolutely embarrased an older Vette..

I would figure it to be very close against a Z06 rolling on from 30 but from a stand still you would be behind till past the quarter mile.

It is just so good at acceleration.

I don't understand why anyone would put a supercharger on a Z06. I thought that the main delay for the vette was that the lightened chassis was twisting under the 500 hp and they had to figure the best stengthening method without adding very much weight.

Re: Absolutely embarrased an older Vette..

Ballistic...

I might agree with you. IF I didn't have an uncle who has an L82 that has some nice engine mods done to it and LOVEs to mess with kids in tuners. By the way, he's 56.

Some of you guys make it sound like I was running 155 through a residential neighborhood or something. I think going through first and second you get going what? Maybe, 80? I personally don't think that 80 MPH in an unpopulated area with a divided road is that dangerous. **** it had been so long since I had a quick car I just wanted to know if it was as quick as I thought, or if it was my imagination.

Re: Absolutely embarrased an older Vette..

80mph is still enough to kill somebody. The point is to unleash the fury outside the city limits. that's all they're saying. Divided highways, back roads with unlimited front and side visibility, tracks, etc.

Re: Absolutely embarrased an older Vette..

dude, I wasnt bashing you. I was just explaining to the Buggy why there were so many people that were bashing you. I used to streetrace... but we would line up on the interstate to drag.

and something WILL happen.

I
-had a rod blow through the oilpan and the inside of the car filled with smoke
-had a ring gear break at speeds and rear wheels locked suddenly. the car stood on the front two wheels and slammed down. the driveshaft went spinning and beat the bottom of the car, ripping brake and fuel lines.
-was riding with a buddy when he lost control and went flying through a fence
-shredded a steering tire at 100+ mph

this was all on a controlled access freeway, 50 feet wide, no businesses, no driveways, sidestreets, traffic lights...etc. I'm not gonna tell you not to do what I myself did. I'm just telling you that
1. something WILL happen/go wrong
2. your uncle needs to sell his Vette if all he wants to do is fool with children in Hondas on the street.

Re: Absolutely embarrased an older Vette..

Exactly B. Ive had friends killed street racing in "controlled" enviroments. Five lane roads with no traffic other then an 18 wheeler once in a blue moon that will warn of his arrival. Yet somehow people still get hurt cars still wreck. Racing out there is dangerous as ****. But racing down a main road is just stupid. Oh and ya **** right I street race.
