<HTML>I submitted a post a while back regarding speedometer error in a 1982 280zx. Based on everyones suggestions, I changed the speedometer drive gear on the transmission. Here is my problem. The gear that was in the transmission had 19 teeth. From what I understand, there were 3 options available...either 17, 18 or 19 teeth. I changed the gear from 19 teeth to 18 teeth. This made a marginal improvement ( I would guess the speedometer reads about 3-5 MPH higher than it did before.) However, it is still reading very low in relation to actual speed. Based on the change that 1 tooth made, I doubt the 17 tooth gear will make any significant difference.
I am beginning to get very suspicious about the drivetrain on the vehicle. Assuming some aspect of the car is not original....say transmission or rear end, is it going to be possible for me to have an accurate speedometer? Were there different options on rear end ratio's? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.
