Argh.
"All A/C on the 240 was aftermarket. Nissan did not make factory air until the 260Z. All the 240 A/C was dealer installed using a kit. Some mounted the compressor above the alternator while others moved the smog pump and mounted it there. The rest of the components in the various kits were all the same. "
Wrong.
The S30 series had A/C from inception, IT JUST WASN'T AN OFFERED OPTION IN THE NORTH AMERICAN MARKET. If you doubt it, please research Nissan P/N 27610-E8800 UNIT ASS'Y-Cooling, it goes hand in hand with the vacuum actuated door controls (just like on the later 260 and 280Z models...) Perhaps the 240Z Vacuum Actuator P/N (27081-E4100), or perhaps the A/C Bracket Assy (P/N 11910-P0300) may lead credence to the fact that it was an option from day one. Such ignorant catagorical statements lead to misinformation and simply need to be snuffed out when they arise. I'm not saying you are going to find ANY of these parts today, but to say it was 'never available' is just plain WRONG!
The rest of the statement is equally ignorant of the design differences of the ARA and Frigi-King (the two most popular retrofit kits during importation period). There were several configurations of compressor (including the Nissan OEM ROTARY STYLE) that fit with the STOCK-LIKE OEM relocation of the AIR Injection pump to above the compressor and driving it (the AIR Pump) from a second groove on the A/C Compressor. A York style compressor could be mounted high or low, it's more common that it was over by the fuel pump, but on some JDM applications with FACTORY air I have seen it down under the intake manifold. Brackets exist to put stuff wherever you want it.
Someone recently reconfigured a Frontier A/C system to work in an early Z. Like SidWell suggests, if you are a parts scrounger there are several cars with similar greenouse and interior volume that could be resaonable donors, and if you know how the OEM IN DASH SYSTEM WAS SET UP, retrofitting one within the dashboard for proper cooling of the interior is definately possible.
For instance, the Geo Metro had A/C available. It's A/C pump was close to the same size as the Z's AIR pump, and it's evaporator assembly is definately small enough to fit where it needs to convert a 240...with interior volume similar and comparable glass heating load it looks like a decent donor.
Just beware what you read here, and take many things with a grain of salt. The misinformation can be daunting.
