ripped off by wiring guys?

A week ago my 240 mysteriously stopped charging, apparently shortly after charging up a low battery, as if the extra juice required to recharge the battery had screwed something up. My local Z shop insisted I take the car to a wiring specialist before they'd touch it, 'cause the previous owner had hacked up the wiring.
Four hundred bucks later, the wiring guys gave me my car back with a lot of pretty new wires and a new regulator, ready to go back to the Z shop for a 50 amp factory alternator. But when they put that in, the amp meter was reading way high and they wondered if the wiring guys had put in a bad regulator, cause the alternator was putting out 17 volts at the battery.
But before I could get back to the wiring guys, the amp meter appeared to settle down to normal, so I drove it for a day - BUT NOW IT WONT CHARGE AT ALL - it's running off the battery again, just like it was $600 ago!
Is there anything else it could be? I'm taking it back to the wiring guys tomorrow, but I'm wondering if I was just conned into replacing all this stuff when it's nothing but a bad ground or a blown fuse or something!

primerZ, hard to say if you were ripped off as we didn't see how hacked up the wiring was. What you are experiencing is the very reason I started doing my own repairs .You could have removed the alternator had it check, purchaced a new alternator, regulator, battery, and battery cables for less then half of your six hundred. Looking at it from the local z shop point of view. They could have replaced all of the above and still had problems and the hacked up wiring could reflect on their work. I'am not agreeing that the wiring was a problem as everything seemed to be working before the alternator went out. Hope the wiring specialist does you right and everything is cool. You asked about a bad ground or a blown fuse. Any thing is possible, there again check the grounds and clean. Also check the fuse box. On a side note, many shops will not repair an auto if after market parts are installed. This could be a real problem for a man on the road miles from home. I know I wasn't any help but I mean well. Hope everything works out and your luck improves
