replacing the injectors

last week i was driving my 78 280 on my way home from work and i stopped and got like 3 gallons which brought me to half a tank. i get about 2 miles down the road and i start to smell fuel very strongly, shut the car off, and pulled off the road. i pop the hood and the everything was soaked in gas! i only had another 3 blocks to my house so i just pushed it home. i popped the hood and turned the key on and gas instantly started spraying out of the 3 injectors closest to the frewall... i looked at them up close and noticed that somebody had wrapped electrical tape around all of the injectors so i took the tape off and they are all cracked.... sounds like fun.

im going to MMI (motorcycle mechanics instatute) so i dont have too much free money, but when i get done with school im going to stroke, and turbo and change the fuel injection system.

Whats cracked the insulators or the injectors? I bet it's only the insulators, just go to a pNp and get a bunch off a 30 or a 130. If you can wait a few days order the gasket kit from msa and install the insulators and new O-rings. You'll get that warm feeling of confidence that your injectors are done right.

I don't think 3 injectors would start leaking at the same time, maybe one. I would look closer at what's leaking and where it's coming from.

the insusaltors don't leak fuel. The o-rings is a possibilty that fit around the nozzles, but I'm also betting on the hose. If the injector body is leaking, like between the plastic and metal parts of the injector, then the only way to fix that is to completely rebuild the injectors, or the easier route to just replace them. If you have three that are leaking now, the others will soon. Just replace all.

one is leaking really badly and the other two have slight leaks, it is the plastic base ( insulator? ) that is cracked and actually missing a few pieces. i would have to completely rebuild all 6 of them, i would love to have the chance to rebuild them myself but i just simply dont have the time right now and i need my car fixed its my only transportation right now so i have been having to car pull ( GAY ) even know i get crummy gas milage (as you all know) i F-ing love driving my car

Search around...

You can find all 6 injectors with new seals on fleabay and other sites. I know a guy who got it all for $150. I would do this once and do it right, replace all 6, it won't take you much longer at all. The new ones will have a better spray pattern than the old ones so it'd be best not to mix and match.

As WangsMan says pull the fuel rail off as one piece. The hardest part is getting it unbolted and loose on the front of the engine. Were it bolts to the intake is easy. It's all easy really.

Take the rail as an assembly and replace the injectors 1 at a time. Pay close attention to making them sit the same length off the rail as the ones your replacing. This way they will seat and your rail will bolt back on easy.

This entire job can be done in a couple hours even for a first timer. I just replaced all 6 on my turbo motor. The motor is out of the car but still all together so getting at the bolts is the same. It took me just over an hour and I was BS's with a friend while doing it.

good luck

I have a hard time believing thqat the injector holders are the cause of gas all over the engine. Far more likely that it is the hoses.

For that matter, I find it strange that 'someone' put electrical tape around said hoses and it lasted any length of time at all.

Me thinks that this Z owner isn't telling us everything or is just totally out of it...

well I still don’t have enough money to get the injectors but I took the injectors out today ( Yes people i numbered everything and I stuffed rags inside the holes in the intake ) its weird 2 of the injectors are 1 piece and the other 4 are 2 piece bases ( what the **** are they called ) and the 2 similar ones have small chunks missing and the large O rings stretched out through these two bases where missing chunks and was leaking the fuel out there. the other 4 injector bases where made up of 2 half’s one is plastic, and the other half is aluminum, the small and large o rigs in these 4 looked age checked and weren’t far from leaking. I couldn’t find out whey the 3rd injector started leaking but I think it might have been an O ring failure. The injector bodies look to be in good condition I think I can just replace the O rings and the bases.

If you do keep the injectors, have them cleaned. O-ring replacements are inexpensive. If the plastic bases are intact re-use them. If not, replace them. This is where a junkyard is handy. You should be able to find them no problem if they have any z or zx with fuel injection. The z's had the 2 piece holders and the zx's came with the one piece. Either will do the job.
