NOS OR TURBO?

I was considering rebuilding my engine then adding either a turbo or a NOS system. Before i do that I figured I'd see if any of youz guyz would know if this is something i would be able to do on an 80' zx. Thanks for all suggestions.

personally, i would go with the turbo. You always have the power when you need it. no refilling the tank, making sure you keep the bottle warm. But, nos is the cheap way for horsepower. Just remember, you get more respect when you have a bad ass turbo car rather than a fast nos car.

Bottles are for babies.

Turbos have the power at all times, have more way respect, and can easily be brought up to 300+hp. As for NOS, one, as the title says, secondly they only make a 65 hp shot the l28. Get the turbo, and feel the power.

Re: Bottles are for babies.

i've actually wondered if you could do both...?
i'm a long way from that point..
too much trouble keeping the car running while i'm SLOWLY moving forward in the condition of the car...

when i finally do go about putting a turbo on my ZX...
can i use the engine i've got now?
or do i need to swap engines out?
I'd like to just use the engine i've got now...
it's in really good condition... but if it would be healthier for the car
to just replace the one i've got... i'm open to that possibility.
also... what else on the car needs to be upgraded in order for it to handle
the power? (i'm not looking for detailed answers...yes/no... or a list.. or something short and to the point)
thanks....

One more serious difference: Nitrous Oxide (it's the translation of the ricer term, NOS - /naws/) can go both ways. A friend of mine found this out the hard way. It blew his air box apart. A turbo or s/c will only feed into your intake, not blow out like Nitrous Oxide can. A common mistake people make (Ă  la The Fast and the Furious) is that they think NItrous Oxide is explosive. It's not. It is an oxidizer. It is putting more oxygen into the combustion chamber so you can run more fuel. More fuel is a bigger explosion. Bigger explosion equals more power. To truly make the most of a Nitrous Oxide system, you need to upgrade the fuel system and, optimally, build the engine to take the bigger explosion. This, incidentally, is EXACTLY what you would do if you were going with a turbo or supercharger. So, there's really no reason not to go with a turbo or s/c if you're going to build it to it's fullest potential anyway.

Just my opinion. Good Luck.

Another way to go would be to build your own Nitrous Fogger system. It's different from Direct Port Injection in the way that with the 280 (Or any EFI ZCar) you'd have to drill holes in your Intake. With a fogger system, on an EFI car, you can just get a fogger nozzle, and rig it up right before your throttle body. Nitrous Oxide isn't dangerous if you know what you're doing. I've seen ricers blow their lids at the track, and i've seen some do well. But, with a 280, it's easy and a cheap way for HP. I'm actually designing my own Nitrous system. I've designed a few, one for my friends '93 accord with a H22A engine (2200cc (2.2L) DOHC Vtec) from a '00 Prelude. That was the hardest. But he's got the fastest 4-Door accord around. :) hehe

If you think about it, all you'll need is a bottle, a solenoid, tubing, a fogger nozzle, and maybe a bottle heater if you want consistent times. I'm just building mine for fun, and the fact that I can get one done for about $120 compared to the ZeX systems Nitrous systems $539.

Think about it. If you want serious HP, and track times that'll blow the **** out of the ricers, then go Turbo and pimp out the engine. But if you just wanna have fun like me, build a cheap Nitrous system.

and don't ever call is NOS. EVER. It's Nitrous Oxide. :)

Enjoy.

Re: Bottles are for babies.

I have a ZEX kit and love it ! that only draw back is that N20 is cheap at first, but after you fill the bottle a few times you might as well went turbo. I'm using $30 worth of N2O a week at the track. And my kit was only $509 :) no really how are you uping the fuel pressure with your homemade kit?

Good luck

Both!

Yeh both can be done. In fact both is good for turbo engines. Because the gas is squirted in freezing cold, it cools down the inlet temp. Which means you can run more boost! But you will need bigger injectors, a nice aussie fuel injection system would be good too. And a bit of time spent on the dyno tuning the computer and getting the timing just right would give you a really fast car. But if you try to bodge this, there will be a big bang.
