My U-Pull-It Journey: How to ID 89-91 Honda Civic?

I'm going to go to the pull-a-part and try to find a heater blower for a Honda Civic 89-91 for my upgrade project. Maybe you can help me save a few minutes finding the a suitable car and getting the unit out.

The yard is giant, and they provide no help. I will be lucky to find the section containing the Hondas. So I am on my own trying to ID the right car.

Can you tell me how to read a Honda VIN so I can narrow my search?

I got on eBay and looked at 89 and 90 Civics, so I have a good idea what they look like. But the VINs all look like this and I can't figure out the year:

1HGED3641JA036511 = 88

2HGED6342KH556791 = 89

2HGED7368LH520516 = 90

1HGED3543ML065857 = 91

***

Also, once I find a suitable blower motor, do I need anything other than a screwdriver to remove it? Since I'll be hiking around perhaps for hours, I don't want to carry any other tools than are absolutely necessary.

10th Digit represents model year. In the above case, the J, K, L & M represent the years. Some manufacturers use different letter/number designations, but nonetheless ALL will use the 10th digit for model year representation.

Hope it helps.

there is usually a sticker on the door-jam that states the month and year the car was manufactured. A lot easier than trying to decifer the VIN codes

Will,

I did the upgrade and I don't think it is worth the time and expense. But, if you feel you must have it let me know and I will sell you the Honda blower motor that I got for it. I paid $30 for it and it came off a low mileage Honda as I was there when he took it out. I will sell it to you for the same price. Let me know if you are interested.

Thanks, John. I am putting in a 72 240z, which may have a weaker fan than yours. My desire for this fan is based solely on recommendations of others. As the car is all apart and in the midst of being put back together, I just thought this would be a good time to do it.

Time and expense?
I paid $10 for the fan, and was able to get it out of the Honda in under 5 minutes. It is nowhere near easy as on a 240. I installed it in the Z in under 5 minutes, but I used a cordless Makita saw to get it out of the Civic. No joke.
And on a 240 (compared to what came on my friend's 78 280) it is definitely worth the trouble. The v2.0 72 is getting one. Maybe out of the v1.0 if I can track down the guy I sold the crashed hulk to...
