Hello everyone! I recently saw spyshots of the new 370Z and fell in love. I dont know but something about just sold me! First, let me say I am still a few years away from driving and getting my first car (2012-13). I am getting my moms '07 RAV4 and I am thinking about selling it for around $10K cuz we dont drive it much. I am also planning on having around 10K in my savings. So, whaat do you think, a 370Z for 20K (used of course).

Having a 330 hp sports car for your first car is asking for a lot of trouble. I really doubt your parents would let you get one even if you could somehow scrape together $10K working a teenager job for close to minimum wage. Stick with the Rav 4 until you've been driving for a little while. You know that insurance for a new driver and a 370z will be a minimum of $1500-$2000 a year, right? And that's before you crash. If you really like Z's, you could look into getting an S30 or S130. You'd have to work on it but if you like cars and can save a little money to pay for parts, that might be the way to go. It's not for the faint of heart though. You'd have to be willing to fix stuff when it breaks. But as for the 370z, get yourself through college, get a real job, and then get one.

keep the rav4, and save money while you're in high school. i did the math, and if i would have save my money that i used for tires and fuel every weekend, i would have saved close to 12 grand IN MY SENIOR YEAR ALONE. just be happy you don't have to buy your own car, and the one you are getting is safe AND reliable. Be grateful.

I already have about $4K in savings, just to clear up confusion on how im supposed to get 10K in 5 years. Well, my parents said i MUST keep the RAV4 when I have my permit, so i'll already have a year or two in driving experiance.

2 years is not enough driving expereince to handle a 330hp car. If you really insist on getting a 370Z, then take a hi-performance driving or accident avoidance class thru Skip Barber or something like that. Learn to know and respect the power of a sports car. Taking a course like that will most likely lower your insurance premiums. And when you do go to college, some insurance agencies lower your premiums when you have good grades. The higher the grade on your transcript, the better the effect. Right now I'm $1200 a year and I have a speeding ticket on my record, which is pretty good in my opinion. I'm working on taking an accidental avoidance course and maybe a performance driving one to really lower it. So take these guys advice. Stick with the RAV4 or sell it, buy a good condition S30 or S130 generation Z and use the extra money to work on it. If you put the money you have on an S30 or S130, you'll be wiping the new Zs all over the asphalt. Not trying to crash your dream and all because that's not the kind of person I am but one thing that you will learn is that dreams like these take time. I don't want to see someone achieve their dream and end up wrapping it around a tree later.

Chaos gave some good advise there. As far as accident avoidance courses, look into SKID school. I don't know if they are in your area but your could google them and find out. That will reduce your premiums a little and it's a great course to have under your belt. I don't know as much about Skip Barber but I've heard good things about it too. But the thing is, no matter how skillful of a driver you become, you also need good judgment to go with it. When you drive, there will always be things out of your control. I'm only in high school myself and I probably wouldn't trust myself with such a fast car either. It only takes one bad decision to change your life or someone else's life. Odds are that you won't get in a serious crash with a 370z but there is still a greater chance of something bad happening than in a rav4. And just imagine how crappy you'd feel if you crashed the car you spent 5 years of your life working for.

Still, it doesn't mean you have to stick with the rav4. There are a lot of fun cars out there that don't have as much power. As you can probably tell from my name, I have a 77 280Z. The S30s and S130s are fun cars that aren't so dangerously fast. As far as new cars, a civic si, cobalt ss, eclipse, tiburon, mini cooper, lancer, or anything like that would be good also. But ultimately, it's entirely up to you (and probably your parents) what you drive. Only you know what you'll be able to handle and afford. You just want to make sure you don't end up on the evening news wrapped around a tree.

Coworker of mine friend had an 03 Cobra, stock, except exhaust, owner is probably 19.

He wanted to race me in my TTZ, I kept saying no.

I heard a week ago that he "lost control" and smashed over a curb, hit a tree on the median, took out the tree, drug the tree across the other side of the street and into the curb on the other side, where the car finally came to a halt.

Totalled.

My coworker said "I don't know how he did it, hes such a good driver."

My ass, hes an idiot "mr fast and furious" who thinks hes an invincible and great driver because his car has power.

Agreed on an S30 or S130, my first car was an NA S130, I had a lot of fun cruising in it, and still do. Its your money though, not mine.

Have you asked them what they think of that idea?

My parents sold me their old RWD car at a steep discount, so that I had to work and earn the cash to buy it. I did much learning driving that car, and lessons that you need to learn on a beater. I know that I probably would have ruined a 370z or other sports car due to inexperience.

For example, how do you drive a RWD in the snow for long distances? How about in the ice? What if you accidentally slide off a gravel road because you are driving a bit fast for conditions, but don't know it?

My advice is this: if you really want to own a sports car with 300hp, then first buy a used RWD car with NORMAL or LOW power, and learn how to drive it very well. When I say that, I mean listen to the posters above when they say you should take some high performance driving schools. Once you can control that car in speed conditions and bad weather, and haven't proven yourself an idiot, then go and buy yourself a 370z and keep it for a long time.

HHHmmmm there is a little thing called INSURANCE that you are forgetting about paying.

Your monthly insurance premium for a two year old 370Z will cost you as much or more than a car payment when you are just 18 years old!!!

My advice would be to buy a $3-5K Z or Miata that you need not to fully insure.

Learn how to really drive and save the fancy sports car stuff until AFTER you finish your college education and have a decent source of income.

So, your 13 now? Wow..
Actually 11 unless they've been changing the laws around and I haven't been paying attention. And got $4k in savings?

Agreed with drivenZ, so I won't dignify the car thing with serious advice except to say: save your money, especially in this economy. Have you thought about what you want to be driving in 10 years?

By my math, that makes him 11. Shouldn't he be eating PEZ and riding his big-wheel right now?

^Agreed. Although if anyone can convince him not to squander that [hopefully] hard-earned $4k before completing puberty, he'd certainly have been done a favor.

This thread has certainly conjured more real-world analysis and way more in-depth responses than it deserves, but there is still a good lesson to be learned from it, provided he will listen: save, save, save. The sooner you start the earlier it will pay off, and you'll realize that not having a 370Z didn't matter because you won't be trying to impress the same friends and girls in 10, 7, even 5 years time (which is really not that far off, no matter how far away it seems now).

I understand where you all are coming from. My dad actually said an Audi A5 is the perfect car for me. Here are a few reasons:
1) Its a gorgeous car
2) It has AWD for snow and saftey
3) It has 4 seats rather than 2
4) It has modest power, not too slow or not too fast (265hp)
5) The AWD system is rear biased so it gives me a taste of what a rwd car feels like. (40/60 front/rear)

Re: Stiil bankrupt on reality...

13 years old and the parents are giving you a car already. All set to drive to school as soon as you turn 16. Thinking about a fast sports car already. 4K in savings, awsome. You must have a good job to be able to save 4K already. Wow I don't know where to begin. No wonder this child is thinking he will be driving a 370Z. Savings? No you've been given 4K and a new car. After you've gone out and earned something you may then be responsible enough to drive any car let alone a Z. Sheesh.
