Ignition timing on porsche

the timing light is hooked up to the battery with the neg and pos leads, and the secondary lead goes to the number one spark plug wire.. the voltage in the plug wire will induce a flash for everytime the plug fires.. on the harmonic balancer ( not the flywheel) there are a series of marks, these will be spinning past the timing tab very fast while the engine is running. you aim the timing light at the harmonic balancer, and pull the trigger.. when the plug fires, there will be a flash, and you will see the timing marks.. find out what mark on the balancer is btdc, find out what timing should be, and move the distributor until the mark you see is lined up with the timing tab. buy a light, and just hook it up and point it at the dist. its self explanatory from there.... good luck
