How to hook up starter motor.

pics, and the hazard of incorrect hookup

always remember that the Z has the typical negative ground electrical system. thus the negative battery cable should always be connected to some part of the engine or chassis. hence called engine or chassis ground. and as mentioned on our Zs this negative connection is conveniently made on the upper starter motor bolt (arrow in pic, cable not shown...hehe).

and the positive battery cable as on the majority of (negative ground) cars is secured to the starter solenoid batt (+) terminal because the starter motor uses more juice than any other circuit on the car.

IMPORTANT: if you inadvertently connected BOTH the battery POSITIVE and NEGATIVE cables to the bolts holding the starter motor a disasterous short circuit would occur. in short (no pun) you would've electrified the entire car by passing DC voltage throughout the body and chassis. in a sense, a worst case scenario of frying both battery cables to the point of causing a fire and worst, compromising the nearby fuel lines with the possibility of battery explosion of it's deforming sulphuric acid.

do not proceed until you fully understand where the positive and where the negative cables go.

another pic

depending upon the year the white fusible link connected together with the battery positive cable is routed differently. on 240Zs it is the source of voltage to the lowly fusebox. on 280Zs it goes to various places, one of which is a fusible link (batt) under the lil' plastic cover.

it is important to spell out what year Z or ZX one is dealing with because when it comes to electrical second guessing could spell trouble.
