It depends on what you want to do and what needs doing. Most people charge around $1,700 for a long block. If you do it yourself and nothing is seriously wrong, then:

$200 to rework the head/valves
$150 to clean the block and hone
$50 to polish the crank
$250 for gasket sets and bearings and rings and seals
$25 for water pump
$150 for a set of eBay injectors
$70 for an engine stand
$180 for an engine lift
$30 for an engine "leveler" with chains.
$35 for a rebuild manual
$100 for hoses and such
$60 for engine mounts
$40 for a new clutch
$110 for distributor rebuild and new ignition wires.
$6 for paper towels
$45 for sealants, loctite and lubricants
$70 for ring compressor, 27mm socket, feeler gauges, plasti-gauge, other tools
$50 for new timing chain

So it's less you do it yourself...

Definately get timing chain guides, good call.
Basically replace anything that you'd kick yourself later if you had to reopen the engine in a few years to take care of.

I do mine for 1000.00. But do all the non-machine shop work myself (engine removal, disassembly, re-assembly, engine install). Most likely another 8 or 9 hundred to not do any work yourself. So 2000.00 would be a fair estimate to have it done at a shop.

Of couse $1,700 for a long block and $500 for an installation is the way to go if you have a lot of money and zero tallent.

$200 for a complete running engine is also a way to go too....

wow, why are you so condescending. who mentioned talent? what is your problem, why are you taking shots at people for no reason? jeez.

for the costs, why bother with building it when you can get one completed for the same price, and with a warranty. seems to me that would appeal to people with less time than others. talent has nothing to do with it, why inject it when its totally inappropriate?

"who mentioned talent?"

YOU did when you reffered to the uninitiated on their first rebuild. It's not condescending to metion zero tallent since if one has money and zero tallent then they just take their Z to a shop and order up a rebuilt engine to be installed. It's an option.

Actually, it's a complement (since I wish I had the money to do that too).

ken hawkins has you pegged, doesnt he? i said uninitiated, not talentless. you dont 'learn' talent, its an innate gift. someone ignorant of the ins and outs of the machining processes (and the archives are full of stories) probably are better served (since the cost is the same---never address the point, always pick what you want to focus on to split the hair! the point be damned, right?) by a complete assembly for the same price.

please go away and take your attitude with you.

LOL, whatever dude. Sorry if suggesting that a $200 running engine was an option.
