My '90 Cougar LS w/3.8 V6 has recently started to sporadically display the code(?) of FF5 in the Fuel Computer's LED. Coincidentally, it has been starting a little harder when cold.

Can anyone help me out deciphering this code, or point me to a site for more info?

TIA,

Scott

Your DLC consists of one black plug with 5 wires going into it and 1 single wire with a grey connector. You should be able to jump your DLC by running a wire from the single plug to pin # 2 on the DLC. This should set your check engine light flashing . You should get a combination of long and short flashes. 1 long flash would be 10. 2 long flashes would be 20. The short flashes are single numbers. 1 short flash is 1, 2 short flashes would be 2, so, 3 long flashes followed by 5 short flashes would be a code 35. Once you have the code # then you can reference what it means and what diagnostic steps to take to correct it. Make sure the key is on but the engine not running. If you can get the code let me know what it is and I will look it up at work tommorow.

Hey Graham, how's it goin? Been a while.

Thanks for the explanation & offer. Now if I can only find this DLC thingy. Just spent a few minutes searching around under the hood & dash with a flashlight - BUT NOOO!!! Found something labeled EEC Test, but it has too many wires.

Any idea where I should be looking? Thanks.

Gimme a pre-emission V8 any day.

It should be on the firewall on the passengers side or near to the battery. It is Usually a black plastic rectangular plastic cover that the 2 harnesses are plugged into. The grey one is a single 1/4 female spade connector and the plack one for lack of a better description is kind of house shaped with either 5 or 6 1/4 female spade connectors. going into it. 2 on 1 row and the rest on the other. If you look at it with the row of 2 connectors on the top (the roof) the # 2 pin is on the right. Looking at it from the plug side not the wire side.

Yeah, that connector labeled EEC Test is what you described. One gray connector with one wire. And six black connectors with two wires each. I'll take a closer look at it tomorrow, run the test and post my findings here.

Thanks again Graham.
