Exhaust smoke

When I first start my 1980 280ZX, the car puts out a large cloud of white smoke. The smoke continues for about three minutes. A small amount of water also comes out of the pipe. What does all this smoke mean? If I dirve the car and then stop, the smoke stops. I also have a problem with the oil pressure. At an idle, the pressure is about 45psi and when driving it is between 50-70psi depending on the amount of gas. The light is always on. Any ideas? Thanks.

sounds like it's due to worn valve stem seals, they deteriorate over time and allow oil to seep into the cylinders. When you shut the engine off some oil will drain into the cylinders until you start the engine again, then the oil in the cylinders will burn off causing the white smoke. That's probably the large cloud, the three minute smoking and water is probably just condensation. Oil pressure sounds good, the switch that operates the light may be bad.

No, it's not oil. Oil would be blue.

White smoke would be coolant man and that may also be what your seeing coming out of the exhaust. Plus you say your oil pressure is low. That tells me right there that you have a tired out head gasket and coolant is seeping past the bad gasket.

Exhaust smoke usually comes in three colors. White is coolant, blue is oil, and black is fuel. As for the water coming out your exhaust. The water is normal due to exhaust gases condensing in the pipes, every street car will have water dripping from the exhaust sometime during the running cycle. I do have to agree with the other guy and say that your head gasket it leaking. Best bet to change it before your walkin'. Have you read the plugs yet?

I have not checked the plugs in a while. I will have to do that along with checking the head gasket. The white smoke reminds me of when my brother's 1986 turbo Subaru blew its head. Thank you for your input.

Re: No, it's not oil. Oil would be blue.

My .02 on the color of smoke.

After everthing is warmed up. Black is a rich mix. Blue is oil. White is water.

With a cold engine white could be oil. I had a AT that was putting oil into the
intake manifold & the smoke was white.
It was simular to a deisel starting up on a cold day, a white smoke.
