93 Nissan 300zx Electrical Problem

Hi-
I have a 93 Nissan 300zx (2 coupe, n/t) sitting idle in Boston (very sad) that I run about once a month. I'd like to get it back on the road for a few months before winter and am trying to sort out an intermittent electrical problem.

So- when the battery is charged- sometimes it starts and sometimes it doesn't. When it doesn't, absolutly nothing happens (no noise, just the dash lights work, but no start cellenoid noise, clicking, misses on the starter, etc.). I'm going to buy a new battery and trickle charger- but I'm curious to know if there are any known problems like this in this model.

Can anyone recommend a good Nissan 300zx specialist shop in the Boston area?

Many Thanks,

John

just curious, but do you have an alarm with a starter kill switch on your Z? i do and found that if it is unplugged from the battery it absolutely will not start for security reasons. it doesnt even try to start, no clucking or anything at all.. as i recall, its not just the battery wire to the alarm, its a small black one that goes to the battery and controlls the starter relay. after push starting it many times untill i could take it to a mechanic, i finally realized on my own that it was because the alarm had come unfastened. if you dont have an alarm or this is not the problem, sorry thats all i can think of. but maybe this will help someone else out in the future. good luck!

that sounds like a starter problem.

When a started is dead, you will not hear a click at all. That would explain why you would sometimes get the car started and sometimes not.

I had a similar incident when I did not think it was the starter. Car would not want to start, just have the dash lights come on but no clicking.

Get that start out and have it tested or replaced.

I'm still figuring out my darn alarm system. The previous owner didn't even understand it totally. I cut a wire so atleast it won't make any noise, but sometimes it'll take me 5 minutes messing with my alarm buttons to get it to start. I doubt its the starter relay because if i don't mess with the alarm at all it rarely gives me problems, out of the .. lets see .. 6 times i have started it under my ownership hehe.

I don't mean to sound like a d1ck...but are your battery terminals clean? One time my car wouldn't turn over at all (or even crank), and the terminals looked fine. I went over them with a wire brish including the loops and it started right up. corrosion is a tricky thing.

The unit that works the alarm has 'excalibur' on it, with 3 buttons. 2 small ones on each side of the front, and one larger in the middle. I'll probably figure it out when i start digging into why my bose speakers make no sound on the right side of the car. Maybe it is the starter relay, because the dash lights do come on it just wont try to crank over, I'll just toy with it some more when i get a chance.
