Well,
Ive recieved lots of good advice and now i have some more brain picking to attend to.

I have a stock 240 with a 4 speed box.I want to adapt a 5 speed from a first generation Z.Do you have to change driveshaft out when you swap to a 5 speed,or can you use the existing one?

I noticed in the repair manuals that the 5 speed version has a different type of driveshaft, its got like some type of splined joint between the front yoke and back yoke,or am i seeing things?

What about the clutch, will it remain the same?Clutch release assembly,is it the same?

If anyone in the know cares to comment, come forth and speak:)

Thanks for your time.
be zzzzzeing you

I put a late 5 spd in my 73 240 from an 81-83 280zx. I used my 240 driveshaft. Bolted right up. You will need to get a 5 spd shifter from a 280z for it to work with the 5 speed. The zx shift lever won't work without cutting the tranny tunnel.

I prefer the late 5 speed over the early 5 spd. The ratios between 2 and 3 are closer. Unless you are going to turbo your z then the ratio in the early 5 spd might work best so the turbo can spool up.

Are you a member of the zccc? Our next track day will be June 5th.

If it is a first gen car you will have to modifie the shifter. Otherwise the only other thing to remeber is to use the Throw out bearing for the clutch pressure plate you are using. IE if you are going to use the 240 clutch componets use the 4 speed throw out bearing. If you are going to put a new clutch and pressure plate on use the 5 speed or matching throw out bearing. Learned this from taking the tranny out twice. Duh!! If you have a first gen e-mail me i have a pic of a modified five speed shifter for first gen 5 speed swap.

Hi Darrell,
I have the 72 model year 240Z.

I Have installed illuminas,lowering springs,upgraded ignition(79).
I want to do the 84 vented rotor setup, still waiting on the spacers.

Im in Vegas, lost wages you know.

Next i want to get the A/C working,it sat for 7 years in a yard here,paint faded,interior consumed,etc.

got pics if you wanna see.

I have a 73 & put in the EARLY 5spd & left my driveshaft & diff in place. They are perfect fits. Dont forget to get the slave cylinder push rod. I did not & needed to make one myself. Now it works great, however like they told me before I did mine, I would eventually want the 3.9 rear & the LATE 5spd. I now agree with them. I am not slamming what I have, but I want that torque off the line now. What you will feel with the early 5spd & stock rear is 1-4 is about the same & very little need for 5th till about 75-80mph. Something to think about. Good luck either way. :)
