Hi, I just swapped an L28 into my 260z. The distributor is the TIU dual pickup version. The donor engine came wjth a dual pickup 280z distributor, and I’m trying to figure out which one I can use? When using the L28 distributor Im getting lots of backfiring, running like crap, and when I accelerate it just dies. (Even when I set the timing to 8-10 degrees. Valves are adjusted, carbs are rebuilt, so I can assume that this is an ignition problem. Can I just clip the wires to one of the pickups and run one? Also, I don’t have the two wire sensor hooked up. It’s broken. (The one on the thermostat housing)

Do you know which year distributor you have? as far as early L28's go, some had the single coil and some had the 2 coil. if you know what car and year it came from, then you can read the electrical section of the factory service manual for that year and maybe get a better idea of what's going on. also, the vacuum advance might be broken and could be causing running issues. The gaps may also be out of adjustment. I don't know a whole lot about this, but I just reassembled my 280z single pickup dizzy and I was getting that info from the book.

You probably cant just clip the wires. I would think that you would have to match the dual pickup distributor with a dual ICM compatible with the dizzy.
Have you thought about a ZX matchbox distributor swap?
