Re: Clearing up all MGB vs. Z Questions HERE!!!
Dustin,
I have been building Brit cars along with my Z's for 20 years now, and you are correct about the V8. That engine was in the Triumph TR8. I race with one all the time, and he can run within 1.5 seconds of me in the Z. The engine was produced in the MGBGT in the UK starting in 1974. It was never exported to the US, but there are lots of people over here using the Buick aluminum 215 from the early 1960's in the US spec MGB's. As far as the TR6 is concerned, there are a few things to check before you attempt to run with him. They are:
1. How many carbs? 2 is stock and many have put either 3 HD8's or 3 Weber 45DCOE's on. This can make a BIG difference in the TR6.
2. Here's a difficult one. Is the cam stock? The TR6 can develop a ton of power with a cam upgrade. There are TR6's here at the British Car gathering with those mods running in the low 13's in a quarter mile. Ask lots of questions, and listen carefully.
Happy Holidays
