Z car idle

I have a 1979 Datsun 280zx non-turbo (it seems I post a lot of problems on here) and it does not idle. To start the car I have to hold my foot on the accelerator and to keep it running I have been trying to hold it at 1000rpm. I have found the vacuum diaphragm that holds the accelerator. It has a port for a vacuum hose on it. The question is where does this hose connect to? The is a long metal tube on the driver side of the engine that is about 6 inches long and curved, and points toward the driver. Does it connect there or to there is a vacuum port on the distributor that is a T shape so there is one open port.

That thing that looks like a vacuum port on the throttle dash pot is just an opening to atmosphere. No missing hose, it's supposed to be like that.

The open port on the T fitting that goes to your distributor either goes to the throttle body or the charcoal canister. But it is ported vacuum show so shouldn't affect your idle. But it should be connected to something or you'll have a vacuum leak while driving.

Can you adjust the idle screw out to get your idle up or is it pegged out?

The long tube is actually rubber or similar material, not metal. It is just silver colored. It's your PCV line and should be connected to the underside of the intake manifold, at the PCV valve.

Are you resurrecting a car that has been sitting? Sounds like someone has been scavenging off of your car.
Yes I found it in a old mans yard that has been grown up in weeds.
This is not the same engine as what is in mine...there are a couple pieces on mine that i do not see on yours and there are things on yours that are in a different spot on mine.
You might have the year where they did not have enough engines and put in Honda engines.
The valve cover says Nissan on it. Did they put the Honda engines in and put the Nissan cover on it? It is a August 78 Model.
Top picture...look at the almost square black box at the bottom of the picture. Now look to the right of it. See that vertical aluminum tube with the threads in it. That is how you adjust the idle. Turn that screw in the center of it. I think CCW increases RPMs

Corrected quote - "You might have the year where they did not have enough engines and put in Honda engines." My mistake...

He's kidding. You've actually made more progress than most who try to get the "been sitting" Z car running again. You should move up to the next step which is to dig in to the Factory Service Manual. You can download it for free at http://www.xenons130.com/reference.html . Start with the Engine Fuel section. These engines are more complicated than the typical old Dodge or Chevy, and if they've been sitting, things tend to go bad quickly.

If you can, one of the first things to do is measure fuel pressure. Since the car has been sitting, you probably have rust in the tank and it might be clogging your fuel lines, fuel screens, pump, filter, etc. This would lower your fuel pressure and might be part of your problem. If you can find out why it was parked in the first place that might help too.
"You might have the year where they did not have enough engines and put in Honda engines."

Now THAT's FUNNY!

I'm sorry...I just couldn't help it when he said his engine did not look like that. It is a 79...but it should still look almost like that. There is a detailed drawing if he would go thru the trouble of downloading the FSM from Xenons130.com
Or MAYBE posting a picture of his here??

Just sayin'

Mike
PDX, get it right. I wasn't kidding about the top picture. I was kidding about the Honda engine. If you are going to quote, please be correct. Next thing you know you will be quoting Obama's comment on 57 states, Navy Corpse men, and the national motto "E Pluribus Unum"
I did get it right. Don't read too much more in to it. The quote is what the forum software put out.

My mistake Palladin, I did get the wrong quote. Sorry for my terse response here, I thought you were trying to start one of those zcar turd-throwing contests.
Yup, that's a Honda. You can tell by the oil cap.

Kidding, but I don't see anything glaring that is missing, but others are much more eagle eyed than me.

Anyway to get a picture of the long metal tube you refer to, it also sounds like PCV to me.
We need a picture in the light. Too dark to really tell anything. You might as well get a camera now and take as many as you can we a large number of pixels...so you can zoom in. Once you have this apart for a while you will forget how it goes back and will need the pics to refer to. I have over 1200 pictures.
The 710 cap is loose...

More close up pictures of the area in question...
