I pulled the tired motor out of the car, with the intent to rebuild it. Cost to do so estimated around $1800. I stripped the motor down to the long block and found the exhaust manifold to be cracked at a stud. I found one on craigslist and was chatting with the guy about needing an engine. He said he has a "remanufactured" one in his Z that is fresh and ran great when parked a few weeks ago. It couldn't be started due to the to the parts already sold.

The visuals of the motor (N42/N47) supported his claim and his Dad that came out after we had been talking corroborated his story. When he threw out the $300 number and I went with it. As I clean up the engine, it is clear the motor is fresh and when I popped the valve cover last night, the head looked like it just came from the machine shop and had fresh oil poured on it.

Needing the room in the garage, I dumped the old motor on craigslist for $50 and sold it in a few hours. So, I'm $250 into the motor. Hopefully it runs as great as it looks!

yes, i love it when a plan comes together

Yes hopefully. Considering your estimate on a rebuild was $1800 & the new engine you bought was reported to be a fresh "remanufactured" engine either you got a steal or you bought another tired engine for $250 & will be a few weeks behind & down $250 on the project.
Do a compression check that should show you alot.
Yea, I realize there is an element of risk in putting the motor in, but there is also an element of risk in putting a newly rebuilt motor in too. Skittle, I wasn't able to hear the motor run, so I'm going of my intuition. I thought the motor that was in it was in good shape with compression of 172-180, but I suspect broken/stuck oil ring, valve guides or all of the above.
get a new oil pan gasket for when you check out the bearings of the bottom end while its out.
