sounds like they go to the thermotime and coolant sensors on the thermostat housing.....they reach over the intake manifold behind cylinders 1, 2, 3,....they could cause it. but i am looking at a 75 so colors wont help ya.

I have an 83 nt and I jus checked it, and seen nothing of the sort. I have a 2pr plug that goes to the housing (Blue,Brown), and 2 individual bullet connectors branching off the same wire also to the housing(both white) (why does a thermostat housing need 4 wires????). Where exactly do these wires go to?? I think I can help here, so long as the tubo has same or similar to my na.

Those wires go to your crank angle sensor behind the front pulley. On the '82 and '83 turbo the same wires go to the distributor that had the optical disk type crank angle sensor. Only the '81 had the magnetic pickup. With that connector unplugged the ECU doesn't think the engine is spinning so does not fire the fuel injectors. The ECU's and the crank angle sensors were interchangeable and use the same connectors. If your crank angle sensor is damaged and you can't find a replacement, you could convert to an '82 or '83 distributor and it will plug in to the same connector.
