"Why Panasports should come in 16x8", a brief essay by Matt McKinney

They should come in a 16x8" size, because I want to run a slightly wider tire than a 215 so I can keep some traction on the car when I'm boosting 15 psi. I have prolly 8" wide chrome rims, 16" and they currently have a 205 on them, and I kinda like the look where it looks like the wheel is a little too wide for the tire, versus the 17s ON the car that are 7" and have a 215...the tire lines up flush with the edge of the rim, I don't like that. Makes it look gay in my opinion. Anyways, the Panasport should come in 8" width because I like the look of the Panasports (looks almost exactly like my 16" chrome rims) and because that's about the ONLY wheel that bolts up exactly to the Z, save the Centerlines. So in closing, Panasport should make an 8" wide wheel especially for me, so I can run at least a 225 safely, and hopefully get a little bit more grip than a 215 would offer.

PS
A 17 would be fine I guess, if only I could find one that fit on the Z and had an actual lip to it. The 17s I have now are Honda rims so the spoke is flush with the rim, making it look all pussified.

i run 225 60 14's on the stock 6" 6 spoke ZX rims, and if you try to go wider you will probably rub the tires on fenders.
Re: "Why Panasports should come in 16x8", a brief essay by Matt

Ya, but then the tire pooches over the side of the rim and I don't care for that. I want it to look like the tire needs to be a little bit wider to fit the wheel. Plus I'm not going to put all this money into the motor and paint and have little bitty 14" wheels :)

I was checking out some Simmons and ROH wheels...but they want too much dang money. Why can't I find some nice modular wheels for like $20 a piece man? :(

pussyfied? perhaps thats a good thing for some?
Re: "Why Panasports should come in 16x8", a brief essay by Matt

How about you go for some Watanbe wheels...
they have some in 17's and as wide as 10"!!!

Look JUST like panasports and cheaper
Re: "Why Panasports should come in 16x8", a brief essay by Matt

Oh really now? Where can I find these wheels?
Re: "Why Panasports should come in 16x8", a brief essay by Matt

From me, your portal to the Japanese market.
Re: "Why Panasports should come in 16x8", a brief essay by Matt

How much can you get watanbe's for? Also what sizes do they come in? I always thought they were much more expensive than panasports and harder to get. If you can get them for a good price I'll buy some. Let me know

Odd, I always seen the Watanbe's priced through the roof, how low are we talking?

i run 225's on my 16x7 pana's...narrower tire than a rim needs makes it easier to scrape the rim
Re: "Why Panasports should come in 16x8", a brief essay by Matt

i have a 16x7 in front with a 225/45/16...looks good..the rear is a 245/45/16..quite a bit of rubber back there.

What are "Watanbe wheels"?
Re: "Why Panasports should come in 16x8", a brief essay by Matt

To Matt300zx, here is a solution for you. Buy your wheels and have them cut, welded, and machined to 8" Sounds crazy, but it works well. I have a friend that did that to a set of stock Turbo wheels and they turned out excellent.
Re: "Why Panasports should come in 16x8", a brief essay by Matt

Yes Jeffp that works. It does add to the runout though. I have yet to drive on a set of widened rims that didn't have some level of vibration. They are not as durable as a one piece cast wheel either. I have never seen one fail, but the chance is there. I have driven a vehicle at over 150mph using widened rims, but it wasn't the smartest thing to do. Another problem is the offset. When rims are widened, all the width goes to the inside making them more positive by half the extra width. In other words, making a Panasport 16x7 +6mm offset (I don't know the real number) into a 16x8 will result in a +18.7mm offset wheel. An easier way of looking at it is that the backspacing will increase by the extra width. If the backspacing was 4" it will now be 5" potentially causing clearance issues.
