Somepeople, say you can drive your car around the block, return, and take your intake off, to see if the wires on the inside are glowing. If so, the meter is good. Y/N?.

How can you adjust the air flow meter correctly? What do you look for in the black box. What is actually being adjusted? And what is the correct setting mark or is there a mark?

If it is bad,will it still suck air through the filter?


If you could help answer these questions we would appreciate it. Thanks!

I'm confused, what year is your car? It sounds like you are talking about a Mass Air Flow sensor. If you have a pre '84 car you don't have one of these, you have a Vein Air Flow Meter. Let me know what year your car is, and what is stock and whats not, and I can help you out.

Actually I was speaking in general. I thought they all worked the same. School me! I have a 280ZXT 81'. I have always wanted to know how these things work....In English..

Ok, your car has a Vein Air Flow Meter. Here's how it works. Inside that thing there is a door in the way of the air flow path. For air to get into the engine, it has to push the door open. The more air that comes in, the farther the door opens. On the top of the door (under the black plastic box) is a variable resistor that is attached to the door. So, the more air that comes in, the more the door opens, and this changes the values the computer reads. Still with me?

Ok, the adjustment screw on the unit controls the size of an air passage that goes AROUND the door, bypassing the door. Adjusting the screw so the passage is more closed off will force more air to go through the door, thus telling the computer you need more fuel. And of course doing the opposite will make it run more lean (less fuel). This adjustment will have the biggest effect on idle and low rpm conditons.

Under the black plastic box with the variable resistor you will find a clock spring that controls how hard the door is to push open. Adjusting this even a little can have large effects on mixture, so if you plan to adjust it be careful. If you wind the spring a couple of notches tighter, the door is harder to push open, thus making it run more lean. And again the opposite is true, loosening the spring will make the door easier to open, thus making it run more rich. This will effect all engine speeds/loads.

ok i have a 79 non turbo-can anything be done to the afm to get an increase in performance. also i noticed motorsports has a performance computer replacement. does anyone know what to do to the stock computer to get more performance?

Working on it man...Just so busy with a lot of family issues/money/construction, etc. You know.... but slowly getting out there....Don't have a web site yet.

I know what you can do..... Trash it! and get the Motorsport performance computer for approx. $600.00/ suppossed to get you 60 Hps. I'm getting one soon....You'll be out of control...Man!!!!
