Which is better for Smog Test, more advance or more retard? According to the technician, I can idle at a maximum of 12000. I and some others on this post think that 10000. Several on this
site have indicated to set it 1000 if the smog technician will allow it. I checked and he said up to 1200is permissable. Thanks, Ernest, Las Vegas

Re: idle at 12000 eh?

Have you ever heard a bunch of Formula I cars at WOT down a straightaway? That's about 12,000 rpm. I think you mean 1,200, which is still too high for any smog test I know of. In CA you have to idle at the RPM specified for that year car. In my case ('76 Z) I think the idle test speed is 800-900, or right in there somewhere. Retarding or advancing isn't going to help you much if the engine won't pass anyway.

I may have some answers

I think I can help out a bit here. I just had my car smoged, failed the first time for retarted timing and broken egr, passed the second.

1st the timing must be exactly what your car emissions tag states. For my 83 280zxt this is 24 degrees BTDC

about the idle I'm not sure what the low end permits, but the smog machine won't start the test unless the idle is below 1100. And if your idle jumps above 1100 during the test, it will start over. Your idle has to stay below 1100 for 30 seconds. The stupid machine started my idle test over 4 times because I hit 1100. The good news is it won't fail just for jumping above 1100 (unless it never gets it's 30 sec below 1100)

Hope this helps to answer some questions.

magic bottle

I once tried this stuff in a bottle (I can't remember the brand name) recommended by a sales person at Kragen Auto...I poured it in the fuel tank of my Miata and presto! My 240 is a 72, and here in southern California, the DMV doesn't recognize it for smog regulations anymore; thank God!
Oh, and BTW, JR (above) the screaming you hear from the F1 cars passing by, is actually the tranny! Straight cut gears I'm told, although you are right about their rpms.---Jerry
