Hi, all. I have a 71 240z with l28. I am planning on replacing head to increase performance. I currently have e88 on the engine. I also have p90 and n42 laying in the garage. I see some e31's and maxima n47 for sale, too. I want higher compression and still be safe without spending a lot of money. I need to decide by this weekend, so any stories, suggestions, opinions,,, any input will be appreciated. Thanks!!!

I'd go with the N42 (in fact, I DID). It'll get you much higher compression. What year L28 is it? '75-'78 had dished pistons, while '79-'83 had flat-tops (except turbos). A flat-top L28
with a head for a dished piston motor is the way to go.

flat-top pistons w/ N42 head: 9.8:1 CR
dished pistons w/ N42 head: 8.3:1 CR
flat-tops w/ P90 head: 8.5:1 CR
dished w/ P90: 7.4:1 CR

Dan Baldwin,

How sure are you for the '79 having flat-top pistons? I bought a '79 for parts and was suprised to find that it had an N42. I had wondered how to check the pistons without removing the head. The production date was 6/79 if that matters.

I am still trying to decide what to do about my '73 anyway so this may be a needless post.
