If your tired of answering rookie turbo questions than don't read.
I have a 1983 turbo motor that has been rebuilt . Is it possible to get close to 300hp out of this motor? I have a 2.5'' exhaust with no cat into a turbo muffler. I will get an intercooler setup, but what is a good turbo to get? I will get a standalone fuel management system as well. I am also comtemplating whether to have the motor bored out to a 3.1L. Any info would be helpful as I have only dealt with NA motors in the past.
Most people who want high hp motors go with the Garrat T3/T04 Hybrid. That other stuff you mentioned should be able to get you near 300. If you go above 10psi your engine will start to lean so remember to upgrade your injectors.
if you've got the injectors anf the fuel management, you should be able to hit 300 crank HP no problem with the stock T3 turbo charger.
Any more than 300HP and your looking at getting a bigger turbocharger..
The more power you want, the bigger the turbocharger your going to need....
but remember a few things.... more turbocharged air = more heat so you will need an intercooler (the size of the intercooler is directly perportional to the amount of boost you want to run)
I"ve heard of l28ets hitting 420+ hp on stock internals.... only questionable links are the head gasket and the pistons, but, as long as you don't detonate, you should be able to hold off for at least a few months.
Get large enough injectors, a GOOD intercooler (spearco) and an SDS/haltech EFI system and you should be able to get 300HP without too much of a sweat. Since the motor is already done, forget the "3.1L" and just get a T3/T4 turbo and run more boost!
Those 32lb injectors will just make it to 300HP with 60PSI fuel pressure under boost at 80% duty cycle, with a BSFC of .60 which is being generous for these engines.
