I just replaced the heater core in my 77 z and while i was replacing the valve assembly ( the valve that plugs into the heater core and the two hose from the fire wall ) one of two wires came detached. One i know is for the heater control cable, the one i detached is brass and hollow. what does it do, and is it important? It streaches under the heater core and turns into some kind of coil. Maybe some kind of heat sensor wire for something? Water doesn't run through it does it?

Thanks,
jason

It is a temperature sensor. If you have it you can use the temperature slide bar to control the heat coming out of the heater. If you don't the only way you can control the heat is with the fan speed. I've had it both ways. It works both ways but better with the sensor. It is a pain to get installed properly so a lot of guys just cut it off and toss it. If I had it to do over I'd take the lots of extra time and do it right.
