I have a 1982 280 ZX Coupe parts car. It was a 5-sp.

My question: In the engine compartment, on the driver's side, there is a round aluminum cannister with two hoses running to/from it. On the top of it is: Caution when opening-under pressure.
Also on it: "AMSOIL".

What is this thing? I have had appr. 5 other 280's and none had it.

Thanks,

Charles

Is this canister hooked up to your radiator? If so, it would be a coolant overflow catcher. Maybe the Amsoil sticker was just stuck on it for looks.

Could it be an aftermarket fuel filter?

What sizes are the hoses? Do they look like fuel hoses?

How about a 'pre-start oil pressure device'. Turn the key on and the oil pressure goes to 20 PSI before the engine is cranked.

Carnut, try to post a photo of it or send a photo of it so one of the respondants to your posting. If this does turn out to be a "pre-start oil pressure device" as Wayne thinks, you might have a real gem of an accessory there.

Come on you can be more descriptive than that.
That’s right up there with “what’s this Do-Hickie?”
Tell us what you see and what wires or hoses come from it.
Is it metallic, plastic or some alien life form.
Is it hot or cold , does it hiss or fsssssssss?
**** it could be your spare tire as far as we know.

Thanks to all for your answers. Someone mentioned an AMSOIL sticker. There is no sticker. The words on the top are all indented into the aluminum.
I will have to try to determine where the hoses went. They are disconnected and one is cut.

BTW, there is a drain petcock in the bottom.

I am inclined to think that it is the prestarting oil pressure device.
