It depends on what your application is. If it is all out race, stick with a 75-78 280 block. They are known for their high nickel content which is helpful for longevity in racing. But for any dual purpose or street application, it doesn't really matter. The F54 is stronger to an extent, but it really is only required in the 3.1 engine, because of the large overbore, which correspondingly weakens the block. An E-31 head is a little small for a 280 motor. If you can find a good N-42, that would be your best bet. It has larger valves, and good flow characteristics
