I believe that for older models with the short VIN you have do go through something like a geneology search. In other words MANUALLY!! I have yet to find a site that will give you history. Try starting with the last owner and check with the state license/ title bureau. They might have a copy of the previous title and then can reference back to the one before that etc. Hopefully it will only have been titled in one state. Don't hold your breath though. For instance, I purchased my 72 in Okinawa, Japan and registered there the first time, then in Utah, Arizona, Colorado, Missouri, and most recently in Ohio. Even I don't have copies of the old titles and even with just one owner and no dealers involved, it might prove difficult if not impossible to trace my OWN ownership over ~ 30 years!!! Good luck.
