The hoses leading from the brake booster to the engine (with a valve inbetween) are in pretty bad shape on my '72 Z and I'm going to replace them. They cost an awful lot of money for a small piece of hose, would I be ok using some generic hose for this? What kind should I use?

Yes you can use heater hose or the like to replace that. The original replacement hoses for these cars are expensive because most are molded. If you don't car about keeping it original or pretty then do whatever. The valve is a check valve to prevent backflow.
