I have an 86 z24 with 3.90 rear gears I was told to find a 80 to 83 non turbo 280 zx tran with 1.85 second gear. I originally had the trans with 2.25 second gear. i was running out of gear before the end of the straigtaway reving past 6000 grand i got nowhere. I bought what i thought was the 185 second gear but it was the 2.07 sec. gr. My question is how do i identify the 185? I have till the 25th of may to exchange 675.00 big ones (ouch) also if you had any suggestions i run a quarter mile track. my power out of the corner is great but they beat to the end of the straight any suggestions on rear gear and tranny combos would be helpful woe! that was long Thanks in advance

What's a Z24?

As far as telling what gears you have, you count teeth and divide.

differential example:
39 ring, 11 pinion = 3.54545454...
37 ring, 10 pinion = 3.7
39 ring, 10 pinion = 3.9
37 ring, 9 pinion = 4.11111.....

Same holds true for the transmission gear ratios.

4.11s came in some Z32s, S13s, and S14s. And probably a few other cars.

Not sure what you're using for rear axle, but you're probably going to be limitted in that respect.

You can probably just buy the ring and pinion gear if it isn't too hard to take everything apart.

You say 15.80 at 56.96, but that doesn't sound right. 16.00 is more around the 85mph area.

The best thing to do is get it so you're trapping just as you should be shifting. Final drive ratio is irrelevent information. You should be making 2 to 3 shifts depending on your gear ratios and final trap speeds.

Based off what you're stating you have, you should be crossing at around 85mph at the end of 3rd gear.
